Mark McLaughlin - CMP Society Program Facilitator
Mark & Ruth McLaughlin are Victoria parents who came to this issue
when a family member became Meth involved. Seeking help, they met other
families in the same predicament. Mark says, "We saw opportunity
at every point of the compass. Whether medical or judicial, in school
education or public awareness in the community, it was virgin ground to
get after this problem. Someone needed to do something. When we looked
in the mirror, that someone was us". Mark, his family, and a handful
of others founded the Crystal Meth Victoria Society, (now the Crystal
Meth Prevention Society of BC), and built a leading website, www.crystalmethbc.ca.
They initiated a media campaign and launched a Community Meth Task Force
that numbered well over 100 people from all parts of the community volunteering
time and expertise to address this challenge.
Over months of effort, the Society and Task Force created a Meth Info
show for schools which has been delivered to near 50,000 students by end
of 2009, Meth Info DVD's, a Meth Watch program, a Clandestine Lab Bylaws
Initiative, a prison and jails survey, community awareness pieces, and
many other deliverables, including a signed Protocol Agreement with the
Vancouver Island Health Authority, most recently leading to the opening
of a 6 bed Rehab resource for youth in the community, with the Salvation
Army as lead agency. When not wearing his Society hat, Mark runs his business, Best Color Video a video production and website development
company. |
